Hiroshima has been around for over thirty years now, and they are still going strong in 2010 with a tour that will be stopping by in Austin to deliver a performance that’s not to be missed. This show represents the meeting of the East and West in unforgettable live music.
The current line-up of the Hiroshima band includes six main artists, as well as various guest artists. The core of the band is made up of Danny Yamamoto on the drums, percussion instruments and taiko, Shoji Kameda on percussion, taiko and vocals, Dean Cortez playing bass and performing vocals, Kimo Cornwell handling the keyboards, synthesizer and piano, and Dan Kuramoto adding the distinctive sounds of the saxophone, shakuhachi and flutes to the mix.
As you can see, there are a range of traditional Japanese instruments involved in the performance. The taiko is a particular Japanese style of drum, which is wide and often played by standing groups in a synchronised rhythm. It produces deep, booming sounds and skilled performers pride themselves on staying in time while performing rapid and changing rhythms. The shakuhachi is a style of Japanese flute, which traditionally is made of bamboo. This is a familiar synth-pop sound as it has included on many synthesizers for years.
All in all, this Hiroshima stage show is an opportunity to experience a blend of cultures which is truly a testament to the increasing global cooperation amongst people and cultures. The group’s 30-year career has used music to help bring people together and move towards a better world.
