Norah Jones Biography and Musical Accomplishments

Jones was born Geethali Norah Jones Shankar in Brooklyn, New York on March 30, 1979 to her famous Indian dad, sitar player Ravi Shankar and mom, Sue Jones, concert producer and dancer. She has a half-sister by the name of Anoushka Shankar.. I actually saw Ravi Shankar when I was in high school in southern California in the 70′s.  He was unlike anyone we’d ever heard.. and was a huge hit.

She spent her childhood with her mother, in the Fort Worth suburb of Grapevine, Texas.. She really had no formal vocal training except in the choir at Colleyville and Booker T. Washington. While at Colleyville, she was in band and also played the alto saxophone.

At sixteen, she changed her name to “Norah Jones.”

Norah Jones won the DownBeat Student Music Awards for Best Jazz Vocalist twice! .. once in 1996 and again in 1997 along with Best Original Composition in 1996.

Norah Jones attended the University of North Texas, where she majored in jazz piano. This was a pivotal time in her life… for it was at  UNT that she had a chance meeting with future collaborator Jesse Harris, which later catapulted her into fame.
