The Radio City Christmas Austin show originated in New York, but now travels around the United States in November and December each year. The show is made up of the extremely talented Rockettes dance troupe, plus of course Santa and various other stage personalities.
Let’s learn a little more about the background behind this historic show which has touched the lives of so many people at Christmas time over the years.
The Rockettes have their base at the Radio City Music Hall in New York – hence the name of the Christmas production. The original Christmas show began with the Rockettes in 1933, and they have performed shows seven days a week, five times a day at Christmas time every year since then. As you can imagine, this takes a whole lot of training and mental stamina as well as physical skill and energy. The origins of the Rockettes date even further back to 1925, when they started out as the Missouri Rockets.
Rockettes Fame
The fame of the Rockettes centers around their part in the Christmas Spectacular show, although the also appeared at the 1988 Superbowl and have made other large public appearances over the years. They have also now released a studio album of Christmas songs, coinciding with the beginnings of their ventures outside New York to tour nationally as of 2008.
The Christmas Spectacular show itself has evolved over the 77-year period for which it has been running. Old scenes have been removed and new scenes added in their place, always evolving to meet the expectations of a modern audience while maintaining an authentic “Christmas” style and atmosphere. To give an example, the current opening song is called “Ring Out Those Bells” – but the show still retains the song “The Parade of the Wooden Soldiers,” which has been featured since the very beginning in 1933.
