Shrek has become one of the most famous and loved ogres ever to grace the big screen, and now he’s taking on the stage in a live musical version of the movie. Loved by kids and adults alike, this musical is based on the story that turned traditional fairytales on their heads. The show will be playing as the Bass Concert Hall in Austin from November 2 until November 7, 2010.
When this lovable ogre first made an appearance on the big screen, he captured the imagination of many people who love a story about the underdog. The leading ogre must set out into the world to find his destiny, expecting the worst because of the way he looks to humans. What many people don’t actually know is that the movie itself was actually based on a book by the same name, written in 1990 by William Steig.
The Shrek musical involves elements of the book that were left out of the movie. For example, in the Shrek movie the ogre is older and lives alone – in the book and musical the story begins when he is seventeen and living with his parents, when he is forced to “leave the nest” and make his own living. The parallels with teenage life in this version of the story are quite clear, meaning many people will find they relate more to the ogre in the musical than in the movie.
The Shrek show includes over a dozen original songs sung as the ogre and his sidekick, Donkey, make their way through their journey. All the other major characters from the movie, such as Princess Fiona, Lord Farquaad, Pinocchio and the Gingerbread Man all make their appearances in this delightful fantasy world. This is a great opportunity to take in some light-hearted family entertainment and see a new take on the story of this famous ogre.
