The name Longhorns comes from the type of cattle that were the backbone of the Texas economy for many years. The name is a reflection of the fact that these college teams will be the proving ground for players that will go on to compete at the professional level, making Texans proud of the sporting prowess of their state. Eleven Longhorn players have made their way into the College Football Hall of Fame, and four have even gone on to enter the NFL Hall of Fame.
The team has every reason to be confident as they are guided once again by head coach Mack Brown. Since Brown took up the reigns as football coach in 1998 up until the end of the 2008-09 season, the Texas team have won 124 games and lost only 27. The team also won the national championship under Brown’s leadership in 2005. The team also won a historic last-play field goal victory over the University of Michigan Wolverines in the 2005 Rose Bowl.
The team has been ranked highly every season since then, but have not quite managed to reclaim their spot as national champions. Many Texans feel another championship win is well overdue, and this just might be the season for it after the last two years have seen a resurgence in the strength of the team.
